What we test, and why it matters

    Identity & purity assay

    Confirms the powder is creatine monohydrate, and how much of it is. It’s the test that answers “is this actually what it says it is.” The latest assay came back at 100.5% against a specification of 98.0–102.0%.

    Loss on drying

    Creatine monohydrate holds water inside its crystal structure by design — that’s what the “monohydrate” means. This test checks that water sits where it should (10.5–12.5%). Ours is 11.5%, which is how you know it’s true monohydrate rather than something blended.

    Creatine is a manufactured ingredient, and manufacturing is where contamination enters. Cawthron screened the current batch for the four heavy metals that matter — arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. All four came back below the laboratory’s detection limits.

The European specification for creatine monohydrate allows up to 1 mg per kilogram of each heavy metal. Cawthron screened ours down to detection limits 10 to 25 times finer than that — as fine as 0.04 mg per kilogram — and none of the four was detected at those limits.

When a lab result reads “<0.1 mg/kg”, the “<” is lab language for below the level our instruments can detect. Cawthron looked for arsenic down to a tenth of a part per million, and for cadmium, mercury and lead finer still — and detected nothing at any of those levels. (mg/kg and ppm are the same measure: 1 mg per kilogram is exactly 1 part per million.)

How can purity be over 100%?

Every lab measurement carries a tiny margin of error, so a completely pure sample can read a touch over or under 100% on any given run. That’s why the official specification is a band around 100% — 98.0% to 102.0% — rather than a single number.

So 100.5% means “as pure as the method can measure” — not more creatine than creatine.

Why the assay is measured “dried basis”. Creatine monohydrate is about 12% water by weight, held in the crystal itself. Testing the dried powder is how the purity of the creatine is measured without that water skewing the number — and the loss-on-drying test above confirms the water content is exactly where it should be.

About these results. All results are from certificates of analysis issued by Cawthron Institute, an independent New Zealand laboratory, on samples of the bulk creatine batches we order; results apply to the samples as tested. Values shown as “<” mean the substance was not detected at the laboratory’s stated detection limit — they are detection limits, not measured amounts, and detection limits can vary between samples. The European reference figure (maximum 1 mg/kg per metal) is the specification for creatine monohydrate recorded in the European Food Safety Authority’s 2004 opinion on creatine monohydrate. Loss on drying follows the United States Pharmacopeia method; heavy metals are screened by ICP-MS (APHA 3125B).
