Nootropics: The Basics

What are they?

The term nootropic was coined by a Romanian professor, Corneliu E. Giurgea in 1972. Coming from Greek origins, the term means "to bend or shape the mind".

Simply put, nootropics are cognitive enhancers and help with overall brain health. Nootropics can be drugs, supplements or plant extracts which improve cognitive functions such as memory, attention, mood and motivation.

Short term impacts

Nootropics have many short term benefits including:

  • Increased energy
  • Mental clarity
  • Better concentration
  • Increased blood flow to the brain
  • Boosted creativity
  • Better decision making
  • Stress resistance

On the other hand, side effects are also seen particularly with pharmaceutical drugs. Anxiety, headaches, insomnia, jitters and tiredness are some negative side effects that can be observed. Under certain definitions, coffee and its key stimulant caffeine are also nootropics and similar negative side effects have been seen.

Long term impacts

Whilst research surrounding the long term impacts of nootropics is still emerging some benefits have been observed. These include:

  • Improved long term memory
  • Enhanced brain repair and brain cell protection
  • Decreased oxidative stress
  • Better mood and emotional balance
  • Improved attention and concentration
